S**t Happens…

After an enforced lay off with a busted knee, I finally made my way back into the pool this week to catch up on all the lengths I’ve missed out on whilst nursing aforementioned injury.  As always, time has been precious but freeing up a few hours this past Sunday afternoon I’d thought I’d make up for lost time and headed to the local leisure centre.  Braving the nasty weather, I walked through the centre doors only to find the pool over run with kids, inflatables and no swimming lane in sight.  Annoyed (and now thoroughly soaked through from the rain) I headed home, jumped in my car and drove across town to the next leisure centre that would hopefully accommodate me… Crook Log Sports Centre.

.

After a long drive through bad traffic,  I finally found myself at the Crook Log reception.  Asking the girl behind the counter if it was possible to swim today, she informed me  I had an hour before the pool closed for Sunday night swimming club.  Rushing into the changing rooms, I quickly got myself ready, went to the loo, then hit the showers.  Wet, ready and raring to go I walked out of the changing room to the pool side. There I was met with a wave of people walking straight towards me, clearly annoyed and muttering under their breaths.  I looked at the pool and the last few stragglers were starting to climb out till it was completely empty.  It took me a second to figure out what was going on and then the light bulb flicked on.  To confirm matters I walked up to the group of teenage lifeguards huddled by the side of the pool.

.

One of the  young guy turns to me and with a completely straight face, (like he’s done this way too many times for comfort) says, “I’m really sorry, the pools closed.  A baby has taken a poo in the pool”.  Now I know I’m 29 years old and really should know better, but I just couldn’t help but start laughing.  Even through the inconvenience of drying off and getting changed again, every time my thoughts lingered on what this young man had said, I couldn’t control myself.  I wonder if those words (and anything to do with them) will ever cease to be funny.  I also wonder if I will ever grow up…
